{"id":1176,"date":"2017-08-29T14:21:28","date_gmt":"2017-08-29T12:21:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iiciis.org\/international\/?p=1176"},"modified":"2017-08-29T14:38:02","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T12:38:02","slug":"what-is-media-literacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iiciis.org\/international\/2017\/08\/29\/what-is-media-literacy\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Media Literacy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Media Literacy<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>found on <a href=\"http:\/\/unesco.mil-for-teachers.unaoc.org\/foreword\/unifying-notions-of-media-and-information-literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/unesco.mil-for-teachers.unaoc.org\/foreword\/unifying-notions-of-media-and-information-literacy\/<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Media literacy<\/strong> emphasizes the ability to understand media functions, evaluate how those functions are performed and to rationally engage with media for self-expression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Information literacy<\/strong> emphasizes the importance of access to information and the evaluation and ethical use of such information.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The UNESCO MIL Curriculum and Competency Framework combines media literacy and information literacy under one umbrella term: <strong>media and information literacy MIL.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">&#8220;Alliance of Civilizations&#8221;-Report<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Report &#8220;Alliance of Civilizations&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaoc.org\/resource\/alliance-of-civilizations-report-of-the-high-level-group-13-november-2006\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Report of the High-level Group, 13 November 2006, UNAOC<\/a>) recommends that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMedia literacy programs should be implemented in schools, particularly at the secondary level, to help develop a discerning and critical approach to news coverage by media consumers and to promote media awareness and development of Internet literacy to combat misperceptions, prejudices and hate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The frequently stated goal of the media is to inform and educate viewers and readers.
